Kicking Skills, Inside and Outside Tom Winiecki Mott Road Elementary School Fayetteville, NY
Kicking and punting skills are very similar between soccer and football. The mechanics are almost identical. While the ball may be different (soccer ball and football), the skill you are asking the student to learn and execute are similar. If you are inside, you can simply have the kids kick against the wall. When practicing punting or place kicking, you can give different point values to different parts of the wall. The higher on the wall that the kick hits, the more points it is worth. That is pretty straightforward. When you are able to go outside, it gets more interesting. Have your kids team up with a buddy and give them one ball. Give them all a starting point and a finishing point. Tell them that they get to take turns with their partner and see how many kicks (of your choosing) it takes them to reach the finishing point. Because they are outside, they can boom away to their hearts content. It also gives you the opportunity to spend individual instruction time with those students that need it most. Tell everyone that when they reach the end, they are to come back and try to beat their previous score. In other words, they "win" if they make it back in fewer kicks than before. Now the emphasis is not on one "winner," but on everyone with the chance to improve and "win." |
