Skill Development:

• Explain shooting
• Hold ball in one hand like a waiter holding a tray of food
  • Palm up, thumb pointed at ear, elbow pointed straight ahead
• Push ball up in the air
• Wave at ball at release so ball spins backwards
• Make shooting arm turn into a "giraffe"
  • Long neck (straight arm)
  • Head (wrist bent at 90 degree angle)
• All with own ball
  • "Shoot" ball straight up in the air so it lands right in front of you.
• Teacher check for proper technique
• Explain lay ups
  • Shoot the same as before
  • As you run (or dribble) in toward the basket jump off your inside foot at release of the ball
  • If they have trouble with this, have them skip into the hoop
  • Make their last skipping step with their inside foot
• Teacher check for proper technique

Application:

• Shoot for speed
  • On signal, dribble to a hoop and shoot a lay up
  • Made, or missed; immediately go to another basket to take another shot
  • Continue until you take one shot at every basket in the gym
    • Only then can you shoot at a basket that you already did before.
  • Give them 1:00 to make as many as possible
  • "Win" the round by getting more baskets than you did the first round
• School
  • All with partner and one ball to share
  • Try to work your way through the grades (K-senior in college) by making baskets
  • If make the shot, move to the next grade
  • If miss the shot have a choice:
    • Stay where you are and let your partner go
    • Take a chance
      • If you take a chance shot (from the spot you missed from) and make it you go on
      • If you miss it, you start again in Kindergarten
