Skill Development:

• Explain dribbling
• Push ball to the floor, do not hit the ball down to the floor
• All with own ball
• Dribble on their own
• After kids practice for a few moments (teacher checks for proper technique), teacher gives students a few tricks to try
  • Under one leg
  • Dribble and spin around once and resume dribbling
  • Alternate hands to dribble (ball follows a "V" pathway)
  • "Lazy bones", dribble while laying on your side
  • Do crunches while dribbling
  • Spin on bottom while dribbling
  • Dribble in one spot with one finger (change finger with each bounce)
• Kids then come up with different ideas to show
• They must be by themselves, in their own space and with their own ball only

Application:

• 2 man chase
  • All with a partner, stand one behind the other
  • Each has own ball
  • First person tries to dribble away from the second partner
  • Second partner tries to dribble to keep up with them
    • On signal, first partner stops and does any dribbling trick they want, other partner copies them
    • When re-start, second partner in the leader and tries to dribble away
    • Sequence repeats itself over and over
• Partner relay
  • All with partner standing one behind the other along the purple line
  • First partner dribbles out, does a trick and dribbles back
  • Second partner has to copy this trick
  • Sequence repeats itself with the second partner now going first
• Flash card dribbling
  • Spread flash cards around the floor
  • Make sure that the answers are face down.
  • Students must dribble up to a flash card.
  • They examine the math problem and dribble the correct number of times.
  • They then turn the card over to check their answer.
• Hokey Pokey Dribbling
  • Everyone has a basketball.
  • All try to maintain a dribble while following the calls to the "Hokey Pokey."
• Dribble tag:
  • One person start with a ball
  • They dribble to someone to try to tag them
    • If they catch them, they also go get a ball and dribble to catch someone else
  • Continue until all but 1-2 has a ball
  • Repeat game with the 1-2 people that don't have a ball to run after the dribblers to tag them
    • If you are tagged, you put your ball away and try to run to another dribbler to tag them
  • Repeat until only 1-2 students have a ball
