Winter "Fun-Derland" I always try to use my bulletin boards to both show what we are learning about at the time, as well as to draw attention to our program as a whole (bragging amy be too harsh of a word). Most of the time I set up the displays of the different skills we are working on at the time. Here is a chance to go about it a bit differently. A colleague of mine, Dan Rayome came up with this idea a few years ago. I told him that we did a bulletin board in the spring called "Spring Into Sports." In it the kids all brought in pictures of themselves being active outside in the spring, or summer. We were loaded with pictures! Just having our students be able to see pictures of their friends being physically active was great. It served to generate ideas for their own activity. Seeing someone else riding their bike was often a motivator to go home and ride their own bike! Dan's idea was to take this board and fit it into the winter months. He called it "Winter Fun-Derland!" We had the kids (and teachers too!) bring in snapshots of them being active in the snow (we have plenty of that up here in Syracuse, NY). The same thing happened with this display. We could hear many conversations about pictures that they saw and how they wanted to try something when they got home. That was music to our ears! One of our physical education learning standards in New York State is Standard 3 - Resource Management. It states that students will understand and be able to manage their personal and community resources. This is always a tricky one, because how can we see our students outside of school? Well, these photos sure give us a good start. They not only allow us to see some of our kids in action, but it also lets us show the kids how important we think it is to continue to be active once they leave our gyms. You won't be disappointed if you go ahead with this idea |
