Snowball Throw (Vera Shaver, via PEcentral)

Purpose: learn & practice overhand throw at a target.

Activity cues: depending upon the skill level & experience of children, use appropriate throwing cues (see PEcentral throwing cues)

Grade levels: PRE - K

Materials: Cut snow people targets from large sections of cardboard & decorate by having students draw/paint on the cutouts. Tape snow people on wall. Snowballs are plastic grocery bags rolled up and taped. Markers to identify a 5' restraining line from targets.

Description: This activity brings the fun of throwing snowballs inside where it is warm, and no one gets cold! Students throw the snowballs at the snow people to see if they can hit different parts of the target.

Adaptations: Move students closer to target. Provide a variety of sized snowballs. Put target on floor for students who can drop snowball from their side. Provide noise devices on targets for students with visual impairments.

Digiwalker

Christmas Shoppers (John Williams, via PEcentral)

Grade level: K-3

Objective: FUN!

Equipment: Parachute, 2 bags (parachute bags will work), 20 assorted 'toys' - beanie baby type stuffed animals, bean bags, whiffle balls, yarn balls, etc.

Game:

  • Spread out the parachute
  • Have the children sit around it evenly
  • Number half students (1-12) & then the other half (1-12) Number 1's get on top of the parachute; give each a bag.
  • Scatter 'toys' all around on top of parachute
  • On signal, all other students pick up the edge of the parachute (stay seated)
  • On 'go' signal, students start to shake the parachute as fast & as wild as they can; the 2 shoppers on parachute try to pick up
  • as many 'toys' and place them in their shopping bags until you say 'stop'
  • Count 'toys' in each bag (students help count); the one with more 'toys' is the winner
  • Repeat using the number 2's, 3's, etc.

Adaptations:
Have more than two shoppers at a time
Based on disabling conditions

  • have one student be shopper and one student hold bag
  • limit the degree of waves with the parachute
  • remove students from their wheelchairs on place directly on parachute (add support as needed); when holding the parachute, place on mat or scooter board (add support as needed)
  • use brightly colored or noise making 'toys'

Have 'winner' or winning pair give their bag of 'toys' to the other student(s) to place back on parachute ('giving to others') Change name of game to include other ethnic celebrations in December.

Sporttime
Jack Frost Tag Game (Maia Schempp, via PEcentral)

Grade level: 3-5

Equipment: 1 (or more) scarf and 2-4 hand warmers depending on class size

Game: Select one or more students to be Jack/Jill Frost (these students wear a scarf) Select 2-4 students as snow angels who will carry the hand warmers. The Jack/Jill Frosts attempt to tag students (use various locomotor patterns - all students use same pattern) Once tagged, students become frozen snow people. The snow angels can 'free' the snow people by giving them a hand warmer. Once unfrozen, the snow people become the snow angels and the previous snow angels can now get tagged. Snow angels cannot be tagged by the Jack/Jill Frosts. Switch Jack/Jill Frosts frequently.

Adaptations:
Based on disabling condition:

  • allow learners to perform various locomotor patterns
  • if mobility is impaired, put student on scooter board or in wheelchair
  • provide extenders to assist the Jack/Jill Frosts in reaching their targets

Always use multiple Jack/Jill Frosts each round, switch often. End game when interest/excitement levels are high. Clearly mark out and limited the size of the play area.
