There are a lot of student athletes that complain about taking Physical Education classes. The argument that most propose is that they get enough physical activity through sports practices and games. I believe that student athletes should be required to take PE classes just like the rest of the student body. My high school made exceptions for athletes when they had games and such. Should school athletics have an affect on PE participation in schools?

I understand that a lot of schools don't want their athletes to be in a position that they could get hurt or do something too strenuous that would hurt their game play. I disagree with this though. I think that Phys. Ed class can actually help athletes by loosening them up before a game, it helps to keep their body in motion, and it will take less time for them to warm up before a game.

It is my understanding that athletics is not considered Physical Education class because it is an after or before school activity. Would it be possible to make their practices part of the school day? If so, this could take the place of their Physical Education class. This may also allow for shorter after school practices in order to get the students home earlier and allow more time for academics. During off season time, the athletes could use their Phys. Ed. time for weight training and conditioning for the upcoming season.

In my high school, students are exempt from the PE if they play 2 sports a year for four years. When I was a student there, I loved this. From a professional perspective though, Physical Education should be required for everyone. Physical education isn’t just about getting exercise, it’s about learning to be healthy and physical for lifelong. Athletes should be required to take physical education, just like everyone else to learn these same skills.

All students should be required to participate in physical education classes no matter what they are doing outside of class. PE is a class and should be treated as one. A student going to a science fair would not get out of a science class because they "get enough science" at the fair. PE is no different. In reality the athletes would benefit more by participating in the class. There is no reason to let kids get lazy.
