Do you think that all high schools are required to have their students wear heart rate monitors? As well as have a section in their lesson plan for just cardiovascular workouts with the heart rate monitors?

Absolutely!!! This places the accountability into the students' hands. In other content areas, the students are accountable for their practice (homework) and are most often graded upon their efforts(number correct or rubric evaluation). We should be no different.

This leads to identifying how the individual students’ perceived exertion (Borg) compares to their actual exertion (heart rate) and identifies exactly what they have to do (perceived) to get the aerobic benefits that everyone preaches. It is also a great method to approach differentiation and acceptance of differences.

As for the argument for the totally fit athlete… Target heart rate and benefits are the same for everyone. 140-160 beats per minute is the same output for the same aged student regardless the fitness level. Someone who is fit may have to produce more mileage/speed than the first time aerobic student. Because they are moving faster does not mean they are working harder than their peer. If both students are at 140 bpm, they are both at equivalent efforts, and receiving the same benefits. They will probably not have the same amount of productivity, which is the only difference in a 140 bpm. So, if you get the complaint that Matthew Jordan is working soooo hard compared to Cathy Potato, bring up the numbers and often you will find that Cathy is out working Matthew!!!!

I completely agree that it is importent for students to wear heart rate monitors! it allows the student to be able to self assess how the are working during each class and exactly how much harder they may need to work. Plus it allows students who may not be as physicaly fit to work out at the same level as those who are.

I belive that Heart rate monitors are becoming increasing popular in our school systems and rightfully so. This finally a chance for each student to be evaluated on an "even playing feild" For so many years it has always been the athletic and fit students to excel and perhaps dominate a PE class. With HRMs we can change th entire outlook of a PE class on many levels.

I believe that schools should begin implementing heart rate monitors into their PE programs. Having heart rate monitors to wear during class gives the students instant feedback. Most heart rate monitors provide students with their resting heart rate, average heart rate during the workout, the percent they were in there target heart rate zone during the workout, and the calories burned. Having these numbers available to students not only provides instant feedback to them but also helps motivate students to try there best. I believe a warm-up mile run with the heart rate monitors on would suffice. Teaching the students how the heart monitor works would definitely be necessary.

Schools should definitely be introduced to heart rate monitors. The one bonus I see in the use of heart rate monitors is the instant results. As a teacher you will be able to grade off of if a student was working to the best of their ability. Some students may look like they are working hard and others not so much, but the heart rate monitors can show you. The student who didn't look like he or she was working hard actually was pushing him or herself, when the person who looked like they were trying really wasn't. I feel heart rate monitors are very beneficial.
