At what grade level do you think it is most appropriate to teach students how to properly lift weights? Weight training is not only good for muscular strength but also muscular endurance. The dilemma is that weight training does not have to be done using heavy weights. Therefore, some people say that weight training can be done at any grade level. |

I don't see why you can't introduce weight training in the 6th grade and up. A very good text that you might consult/purchase is the Essentials of Strength and Conditioning from the NSCA that spends a good deal on weight lifting and the development of adolescents. With kids under 15-16, I would stay in the 10-15 rep range with nothing going to failure. |

I agree that sixth grade is a great age to start with a weight training program. Maturity plays a large role in whether or not kids are ready to lift weights. However before this age, I see no reason why students cannot partake in bodyweight resistance exercises such as pull-ups and pushups. These will give students a great head start as well as provide them with the benefits that come along with having good muscular fitness. |

As a certified Strength and Conditioning coach, my personal opinion is that an actual program isnt appropriate till 7th or 8th grade. If students have to follow any kind of "program" at too early of an age this can turn them off of the idea early on. Thats not to say, however, that activity shouldnt be stressed or pushed for earlier than these grades. Things like using bodyweight like push ups and pull ups are definatly benefitial for any age. |
