I am training for track and field. I am practicing, lifting hard, and trying to get stronger. At the same time, I would like to lose a little weight without breaking my body down. How can I do this successfully? |

Losing weight ultimately boils down to one factor. You must burn off more calories than you eat. This is what complicates the "getting stronger" factor. If you are wanting to get stronger, protein can become your best friend. This does not mean neglect other important nutrients like carbs, though. Carbohydrates are just as important as protein, especially since you are an athlete. Since carbs are your main energy source, you will not have the energy to train if you do not keep a steady intake of carbohydrates. In detail to carbs though, complex carbs are your best bet (i.e. whole grains). Losing weight while getting stronger is not an easy task and is almost impossible for many people, so do not get discouraged if it does not come easily. As long as you avoid the unhealthy fats, such as saturated and trans fats, and keep a good intake of protein and complex carbohydrates, your chances of getting stronger will increase. As for losing weight, if you keep your calories ingested down and your calories burned up, this will improve your chances of losing a few fatty pounds. |
