I was just wondering what other health teachers are doing about fad diets in health classes. I personally don't believe in them, but is it right for me to let that interfere with my education. When I say fad diets I really mean the Atkins Diet, the South Beach Diet, and any other of these "new" diets that are just coming on to the market. I personally believe in a well balanced diet. However, I'm not sure whether it is fair of me to provide a biased approach to teaching nutrition.

I would agree with you about the well balanced diet. At the same time i think as educators it is most important to provide the students with the best information possible and these fad diets will not work for a lifetime. Teaching the students about well balanced eating should be reinforced before fad diets are reccomended. So i would say to give them the most beneficial information about a well balanced diet and explain to them that fad diets will not work for a lifetime.

In my opinion, the only reason fad diets seem to work is because of its advertisement. The goal of all people on diets is to lose weight and better themselves. Look at how these diets advertise. They use famous people who have been able to lose an excesssive amount of weight in a short time period. They make everyday people assume they can lose weight very fast. In all reality, this is so unhealthy. We need to preach how this kind of dieting is unhealthy and very dangerous. I think it is important to look at the pros and cons of the fad diets versus healthy dieting. In all the fad diets, exercise is a huge factor that is stressed. Taking parts of diets are good for nutrition facts as well, however, we must teach that these diets are only for a short time, not a lifetime.

No fad diet should ever be recommended for any child or teenager.Students are still growing and developing. They need all the nutrition they can get. Therefore just recommending them to eat healthy and watch what they eat as well as try and get 3 meals or even six meals a day as much as possible should be given as any recommendation. If a fad diet is brought up by one of the students then i think it would be best as the teacher to show and explain why the diet should not be used for weight loss. Also as said earlier being active plays a big role in any diet.

Fad diets are often dangerous and rarely yield any long lasting results. Most students do not have good knowledge about nutrition. They have no idea on how to lose weight the healthy way in the first place. Before they even start to diet, they need learn the healthy ways of eating. I don't even like the word diet because it means the person will stop after a period of time. Then they just go back to eating like they used to and gain the weight back. Then the diet comes again. This turns into a dangerous cycle. Instead of dieting, tell the students to change their eating habits. Discuss what a healthy meal is and how they can eat right for their whole life. This will have much better and longer results.

I agree that a well balanced diet is important. However, it is neccessary for students to know the negatives associated with fad dieting. Fad dieting can cause ketosis and can lead to eating disorders. Although as educator, we may be providing more information for students that are planning on fad dieting, we may also be giving those students the tools to decide against fad dieting.

I agree that there should be a well balanced diet, but some of the new diets out there really do work. For example,Weight Watchers is a "fad" diet, but most of the people who use it are under the age of 18 because of the growth of obesity doctors are now recommending it! As for the other diets, I am not sure, but I would say to wait a little longer before you bring these diets in your classroom. However you do need to talk about the negatives of the diet so that students can see what it is doing to their peers.

Bottom line fad diets are unrealistic. Yes, the results are great in the beginning, but most of the time people can not live a healthy lifestyle for long while being on them. Weight watchers however, is a diet that i truly feel works. It is more accommidating to a realistic "everyday life". A well balanced diet is the key, but as long as students have the knowledge of what they need to maintain a healthy lifestyle then they will have the tools to apply them to thier everyday life. So, basically what im trying to say is fad diets are something i feel should be avoided, but need to be taught for educational purposes. As long as students know what is really important then there should be no doubt that they can make the right decision.

Crash diets are unhealthy when you flucuate weight constantly the more you go up and down the harder it becomes to lose weight.
