Dear Steve Jefferies, I teach elementary physical education. I teach my students how to find their pulse on their neck (carotid artery) and on their wrist (radial artery). They do this first while sitting down resting. I then teach them that their heart is a muscle and it pumps their blood through tubes in their bodies called veins and arteries. I show them a picture I have of the veins and arteries in a human body. Next I tell them the pulse or beating sensation they feel on their neck or wrist is the blood being pumped by their heart through their tubes (veins, arteries). Next I tell them that to keep their heart strong and healthy they need to do aerobic exercise such as running, walking, riding a bike, etc.. Then I have all the students spread out in the gym in their own space and we run/walk in place to music. When we stop I ask them to find their pulse or heartrate on their neck and feel to see if it is beating fast. If their pulse or heartrate is beating fast I tell them they just exercised their heart and made it a little stronger and healthier. I do this lesson with students in grades K-3rd. I hope this helps. jalopydi |
