It is almost a well-known fact that wrestlers are known for fasting for days to make weight for weigh-ins. I know, from experience however, that this is a very counter-productive method of losing weight. I know that it is better to eat a slightly smaller amount of calories per day than you burn per day over the course of approximately five meals. Knowing this, I have two questions. Are there quicker ways than others to find how many calories a person may burn in a day for someone who is not used to counting calories? Second, any advice on how to convince the wrestlers that fasting is not near as efficient as eating the correct number of calories? Most wrestlers that I deal with are convinced that fasting is the best way. |

You are right - fasting slows down the weight loss process! The key to losing weight for wrestlers is nutrition. However, having HS kids buy into eating healthy is no easy deal. Forget counting calories. Start by eliminating one "bad" thing from your diet each week. (ie, soda pop, sugary desserts, fast food, chips, etc..) Replace these things with healthier alternatives (fruit, salads, nuts, Clif bars, water.) Drinking water helps rid the body of toxins while trying to cut weight. I can't over emphasize the importance of drinking water enough! If you really want to drop some weight and eat all you want, try cutting out meat and dairy products. If you eat right, you will have strength and feel full, and won't have to skip meals to beat the scale. Educate yourself about the importance of nutrition and all the things that you put in your mouth. Eat to be healthy, not just for taste! |
