Does anyone have any ideas on types of integrated warm-ups and cool downs that can get students interested in doing exercises, and help students realize the importance of warming up and cooling down the muscles before and after physical activity?

During soccer training camp we did a newer type of stretching. Basically you walk a few steps and do a stretch for 15 seconds take another step and stretch the other side for 15 seconds. After stretching the lower body you could do some agility like lunches, karaoke and others. These types of activities keep the students moving and it is not as boring as regular circle up stretching. The sooner you form a routine the better.

I currently student teach at an early elementary school. We do a warm-up each day, and usually do a cool down. Each week we change the warm-up to make it fun and new. We have done everything from tag games like fitness tag which incorporated other exercises (push ups, sit ups, etc.), card games where each suit represented a different exercise, running and leaping over small hurdles, running and jumping at flags hanging from basketball hoops and so forth. If you offer varitey in your warm-ups it seems to increase students motivation and participation levels.

Megan,
I agree with Jeanne you have to make it something fun and creative for your students. Have like relay teams to warm up or play a game like freeze-tag. You can do a v-sit then stand up and do 10 jumping jacks. Like have them do an activity but strecth also.
