Hello everyone. I wanted to gain some more feedback for our promotional video at NASPE. Why do you want to be PE teachers today? What drives you to educate people in the ways of physical education?

Hi there. Is anyone else having trouble 'covering' PE teachers who are off sick? I had a colleague signed off with a chronic back problem for the best part of last term. As Head of Dept. I found that I was having to try to ensure that there was adequate cover, her lessons were in-line with where we were in the syllabus and also teach my full load of A Level and Gcse as well as KS3 classes. (we teach the UK based system). It is very tough to find PE supply teachers and many of my colleagues do not want to cover a PE lesson?
Does anyone have any really good resources for classroom based lessons? The problem I have found is that the students expectation is for a practical lesson and nothing in the classroom even goes close to fullfilling that need?

Michael: I am retired now having taught 1965-2001, mostly at the middle school level, with 9 years in HS. Of all the jobs I've done, nothing matches teaching PE. It is entirely self satisfying to see the changes you are able to make in the lives of young people, both physically and socially/emotionally. Few people have that opportunity. PE is very special because kids are so concerned with their bodies and that gives us an inroad that no one else in education possess. How can that not be meaningful. You have the chance to be creative in a million ways, keep active, stay fit, set an example for your students, be a leader on campus, in your community and help children lead longer, healthier, happier more productive lives. Need I say more. I have been mentored by so many great teachers/leaders, that even in retirement, I'm not really retired and I'm having a blast keeping my hand in the game. I would not change the last 40 years, for anything. Joe Herzog, Fresno CA

My name is Chris Zeh and I am currently a Physical education major at East Carolina University. I choose to be a physical educator because I believe that as a teacher I will be very important in students lives. As a physical educator I feel that I not only teach but coach students through life. My main motivation when I picked this career was to be a coach as well as a teacher but with the obesity levels rising my drive has shifted to teaching students the way to a safe and healthy life style that they can continue as they grow older. I hope that I will be able to make a difference.

Being a PE teacher just may be the best job of all time.
Having the power to instill the habits and knowledge that may ensure longer, healthier lives to the future of America is an opportunity that most people will never have. To introduce the future of America to a variety of ways of being active, getting outdoors, and eating healthy in order to ensure longevity of their bodies is an extremely important job that not many poeople in their lifetime can say they did. As an elementary PE teacher I get to see kids smile all day long and I have the pleasure of knowing that their smiles are partially a result of me. I am the teacher they look forwardto seeing and telling things to and the teacher they feel comfortable coming to with their problems no matter what they are. I get to run and jump all day long. I get to hear laughter, help reslolve problems, and best of all see children bettering their health and their bodies!

I have to agree with Kelly. I have taught Elem
PE for about 26 years now. It is still fun and
I learn new stuff each year. I try to introduce as many different activies as I can so everyone can find the thing they can excel at. I love testing them on fitness to see who has worked hard at improvement and then rewarding them with
the National Fitness Award or better yet the Pres. Phys Fitness Award. I just had a girl in 5th grade win it all the years since kindergarten with me. I love my job and the kids I get to know.

My name is Marissa and I just recently decided to pursure teaching as a career. My original plan had been to study engineering but it wasn't as fulfilling for me as teaching our Learn-to-swim program in La Feria, TX during my summer vacation. I have been a Water Safety Instructor and taught swimming lessons for the past five years and enjoy watching my students come back because they enjoying swimming just as much as I do. It took me a couple of years in college to follow the teaching path but it incorporates two of my most favored qualities. A neverending cap on the amount I can learn from the student as well as what the student can learn from me. This position as a Physical Educator not only helps teach the importance of physical activity but can also mold students into becoming healthy for lifetime by sharing the many perks of healthy living. I have now been able to observe numerous elementary physical education classes and can't wait to have a gym of my own. I'd like to spend all day seeing their smiles and hearing their stories. I hope teaching elementary physical education will be as rewarding for them as it is for me.

If you see them everyday for PE be prepared to
do a few things. Guidance counselor and doctor.
Also, WEAR SUNSCREEN and a hat. Visit other PE teachers to get ideas and check the new catalouges for new stuff
