Should students be required to wear heart rate monitors in PE classes? If so should they be graded on how long they were in their "heart rate zone"? |

I think that heart rate monitors are a great way to encourage participation. It allows the student to watch their heart rate and know when to increase or decrease their activity level. I also think that the students should be graded on how long they were in their heart rate zone. This helps ensure a students participation in the activity while keeping them within their target heart rate. |

I totally agree with Serene Thayer. Heart rate monitors are a fantastic breakthrough for our department. A question you have to ask yourself is whether you will give heart rate monitors to each student to have (in and out of class) or if students class to class will share the same heart rate monitors. It is important to remember that technology will fail from time to time. If the equipment is not working it is not the student’s fault and their grade should not suffer. That is where your judgment of their effort comes into play. |

I believe that your question all depends on what age group you are dealing with. It may be appropriate to grade based on zone for older students. However, I believe these monitors should be used to show students what zone they are in for certain activities. It will help them see their intensity and heart rate together. However, it is hard to judge and to make all students wear these monitors on a daily basis. It should be a learning experience to show students how different activities affect heart rate. Also target heart rate zones will not be appropriate for every activity in a PE course. |

We are looking at getting heart rate monitors for our PE Department. Do most of you just have enough for a classroom set? Are they fairly durable (last from year to year)? |
