When I was in high school, we played a game called Organized Chaos which was a basketball game. If you have 4-6 hoops in the gymnasium then you will be able to play this game if desired. First you split students into groups of 4 (if possible) and give each team a different colored penny. Students are assigned a basketball hoop and will also count themselves off within their team. The teacher will decide which two numbers to be the "scorers" first. The two number called will go to the center of the court and lay down around the center court circle on their back with their heads toward the center of the circle. The teacher will place 4 basketballs in the middle and count to three. The students in center court will try to get a ball and shoot on their oponents hoops. The other two students on the team, who are not shooting, are guarding their hoop. They do not want anyone scoring on their hoop. Let the students play for about two minutes before switching up the numbers of who will be shooting and who will be guarding. Teachers, teacher assistances, and injured students can help keep track of scoring. Scoring is kept by how many baskets were made. Each basket is worth one point and by the end of the game, the team with the least amount of points against their hoop, is the winner. |

Small sided games are the best i think. it gives the students more time to practice the skill they are learning. With smaller groups the student are getting more of a work out because they do not have to wait as long in lines. you can have small sided games for any activity. We played side line soccer, Ultimate Frisbee, even for on four flag football. |

Stations, Stations, Stations. You can do anything with small groups if you work in stations. First idea: Have task cards and each group rotates when a signal is given (CD player, teacher audible) Second idea: Organize the students into small groups. Have the class participate in an activity and you call out the small groups one at a time. I have started doing this for fitness testing protocol (FitessGram can be a pain) and use colors for the students to know which group I want to work with. I would simply say, Red Group with Me, and the red group would come over. |
