At my previous school, we observed third grade students participating in a gymnastics unit with bare feet. The reasoning behind this was that it encourages proper development and strength in the feet/toes/ankles. A letter was sent home to the parents to explain the unit, and to inform them that the mats were cleaned regularly.

What are some opinions regarding students having bare feet in class?

I personally don't like the idea of having the students take off their shoes. If you had a room with the wrestling mats then it might be okay. The only time I ask my students to take off their shoes are for their height/weight test and sit & reach test (for the FitnessGram). If a student hurt their toes/foot during class because they didn't have shoes the teacher could be held liable.

In New Zealand children do all PE lessons, indoor and outdoor, throughout Primary and even quite a bit of Secondary school - without anything on their feet! They feel it promotes better development! I reckon they may be onto something too!

I think that children might be more comfortable in their bare feet! You see them running around in the summer outside without any shoes on, who is to say they might not like it in the classroom. As long as the equipment is cleaned on a regular basis and the children aren't at risk for anything bare feet might be a good idea.

I believe that doing a gymnastics unit in bare feet would be alright. That is how gymnastics is performed. Plus there was a letter sent home to explain it to the parents so they are informed.
