This year I will be getting a student teacher for the FIRST time. Can anyone give me suggestions on what you do? I have no idea.

Be clear on what you expect and gradually give them more oppportunities to teach the class. Make sure they know when they are going to teach, and maybe show them some of your lesson plans as well (but student teachers should be creating lessons as well). Usually student teachers will start off observing and helping, then "take over" for a few weeks or so before gradually decreasing their role. Be available for help, and if you give suggestions, do so in a positive and private way. Also, remember it's a new experience for them, and probably scary as well. Good luck.
