I had my students in grades 3-5 keep journals in class. They didn't write in them every class. They also kept track of their heart rate information when they wore the heart rate monitor or pedometer on a form I designed in their journal. Sometimes there would be homework projects that involved writing...those also went into their journal.
One of the activities we participated in was Travel Buddies. Our buddy, Felix traveled to different schools around the country. The kids wrote letters to Felix and to the students at the other schools. We tracked his travels on a map and calcuated the distance he traveled.
