does anyone have any good ideas on how to educate younger students about staying physically fit outside of school? Maybe with some type of project? |

One thing you could do is make up a calender for them. It's like homework but more fun. You can write in a couple different activities a week such as hula hooping, taking dog for a walk, going on a bike ride with your family, etc. |

Megan - you could use the NASPE calendars that are published monthly. If you wanted to have your student then record what they did and have a parent sign off, you could create some type of form that you send home with the children. You could also give students points for doing activities outside of class. Bonus points if they did it with a parent. Have classes work toward points for a "special" game day - or whatever your students really love to do. Just some ideas! Jane Keily LS PE Dept. Chair University School of Milwaukee jkeily@usmk12.org

I work at a special education school geared to children who have Autism and are behaviorally challenged. Many of my students are on a high carbohydrate diet and take certain medications that have the side effect that make them gain weight. On the other end, there are those children who are constantly given junk food daily in their lunches. Throughout my teaching career, I have seen many over weight children. Our students are on a token economy system. Many of the teachers have collaborated with the P.E. coaches to work out a system to reinforce exercise outside of the school setting. Students are to do at least twenty minutes of exercise a day, whether it is dancing to music, running up and down the street, hop on each foot, jumping jacks, etc. The parent/guardian and the child are to document how long they did the activity(s) and it is to be signed by both of them. When the assignment is handed in, the student is rewarded with a certain number of points, and at the end of the week, the total of points is calculated and they have the opportunity to "shop" at the class store. To my experience, it is working very well and the kids enjoy it. |
