Hello, I'm currently a student in College planning to graduate with a degree in Health and P.E. I still have some time before I graduate and begin looking for jobs but it's good to start sooner rather than later. As of right now, I'm torn between the idea of teaching elementary or secondary. I think younger kids would like P.E. more, but I really enjoyed P.E. in high school, the relationship I was able to have with my teachers is something I would love to be able to have with students that I don't think I could have at the elementary level. What do you think are some pros and cons to teaching both age level? |

It has more to do with you and where you would be effective than with which level would enjoy it more. Wherever you teach, it is the relationships that will matter more. I have taught both levels in my 20 year career, but I have had better "success" at the elementary level because of the relationships I've built with the kids. These relationships have continued as the kids grow and go to the upper levels. It sounds like you would be more drawn to and relate better to the secondary level students. You obviously had a great teacher/mentor in your own secondary experience. I think it is great you are asking this question! Seek out one of your former teachers that you trust and ask them these questions. I am encouraged by your thoughtful quest! |

Thank you so much for your input! Like I said I have some time before I will be in the field, but I will definitely pay attention to how effective I am, and how Building relationships go, whenever I get to student teaching. Again thank you for your post, it means a lot coming from someone with your experience level, congrats on 20 years in the field, and good luck in the years to come! |
