I teach elementary PE and would like to do something with the winter olympics. Do you have any ideas? |

The winter olympics is a great way to introduce all kinds of fun activities and integrate other subjects such as social studies and geography. I divide the class into equal teams of 4 or 5. Each class is allowed to choose a country they want to represent. No two countries can be represented in the same class. The team must show on the map for the rest of the class where their country is located. Before each day of activites, each team must share one fact about their country. I try to make someone different share each class. These facts are added to the team score that is totaled after the 2 weeks of games. Other activities I do are as follows: speed skating on turned over carpet squares, bob-sledding on scooters, floor hockey challenge with shooting at a goal, biathalon combines speed skating and throwing a ball at a target. I hope this helps.

I used to have a station activity published on PECentral on Winter Olympics. Search for that. I have also done curling using 2 frisbees taped together and slide on the floor to a target on the floor ( using floor tape). Ice skating with shoe boxes, small hoops, or paper plates. Luge with scooters taped together. Just some ideas! I can't wait!!! |

I just finished teaching a winter olympics unit. I am currently interning at a K-2 school, and the children absolutely loved it. When the students walked in we played the Olympic theme song, had flags hanging around the gym, as well as an olympic torch and the olympic rings. We set up 8 stations to demonstrate events in the olympics. At each station, we also set up challenges to receive a gold, silver, and/or bronze. The medals were pretend, but the children loved counting how many they could get. We had ski jump (tricks on the rope), curling (scooters with shot puts taped to them), partner skate (buddy walkers), biathlon (paper plates as skies, and then targets to toss balls into), ice hockey, bobsled, and luge. HOpe that helps! |
