I'm looking for some documentation, source articles, etc. My Elementary School K-5 wants to build a running track as part of the PE program. It sticks in my head that running on a track surface is not reccomended for children because of Micro-trauma to the growth plates of long bones. Is this still current thinking and where can I find an article to prove I'm not insane when I point this out to the folks that just set aside $20,000 to do this?

I would be curious to see this article as well. We do a track unit on a rubber track for about three weeks. Would this three week unit do that much damage to bones and their growth. I would be curious to read the article? Let me know if you find it.

Our PTA is paying for a 1/5 mile "track" but it is really an oval paved jogging trail. Why? 1. Our field is so uneven and has holes, and clumps of grass that make it unsafe for running. 2. We currently jog on the sidewalk which is concrete. I am a 25 year runner and I prefer asphalt to concrete or uneven surfaces any day. I really don't think you have to worry about overuse injuries for no more than the students will be running. It's not like they are running 30+ miles a week. It will greatly increase the number of students who are physically active before school, afterschool and during recess.

HI...a cheaper alternative to the asphalt running track is to outline a track using mulch. We used 1X4 (I think) boards to create a border and filled in the space with mulch. The result was 200' X 5' jogging track. after the boards rotted out the track outline remained. We had our grounds people put down the weed deterrent black carpet (I don't know the name of it), so weeds are not not a problem. We remulch about once every two years - the mulch is free from the town. I have received a lot of compliments about the cushion the mulch has, but the kids sometimes complain about getting wood chips in their sneakers (usually only after a fresh mulching.). I hope ths helps.
