To All, It is important that students understand WHY they are offered health and physical education. Is it just another subject? Or is it a strong tool used in all areas of life?... leading to the question that most students ask... why do you have to study health and physical education? If anyone has any good ideas or web sites on this question please add a message!! Trina

It's the study of LIFE! More importantly, OUR life! Health and Physical Education is the only subject area that involves the entire child, mind & body. It is the only subject area that empowers students with the knowledge and skills to change thier lives - quite literally. Aside from the movement skills that students learn, they also learn about thier bodies (which we only get one of in life!) as well as the use of just about everything that goes INTO the body, i.e. medicines and drugs, environmental factors like pollution, family structures and different types of families, etc. Just look at your core curriculum content standards and you will find your answers. Think about this: what if students never learned the MOTIONS involved in tieing thier shoes? Surely you agree that is a psychomotor activity that is used every day. What if the students never learned the motions involved in simply WALKING. Come on now, I think its pretty clear as to WHY students need Health and Physical Activity. =) |

dear Trina... this day and age i think its vital for all pupils to have a broad kowledge of health and physical education.. we do not have an epedemic of obesity in this country for nothing and i think that as a student you should be made aware of this at an early age , without of course pushing it to the other side of anoxeria and self esteem issues.i know that as a student in my PE class if you didnt like sport it was tough luck (it never bothered us as we loved it)you still had to take class and suffer in silence but perhaps these pupils should have been asked why they didnt like the activity and what activity they would like to do instead and perhaps bring it into class in a different way so that all pupils got a chance to become involved.apart from everthing else physical activity helps us in all different ways mentally and physically. perhaps if pupils are not that interested in completing in the class they could become more invoplved in the setting up and try some of the coaching and teaching of it to keep them interested ... you would be surprised how they will eventually give in...All students should be encouraged to become involved but without pushing them too far..hope this helps Aoife Lynskey |

Teaching in an elementary setting, I do not run into many of the "why do we have to know this" questions when dealing with physical education and health, they are already excited to come to class and do not need to look for its beneficial value. However, at the secondary level, I explain to the students that one main reason I teach about lifelong physical eduation and health is that most people do not understand its importance. What good is it to the student if they recieve all A's on their report card in the "core" areas, but don't live past their 40's because they died of a heart attack due to poor lifestyle habits. I think it is extremely immportant to not only teach these skills (being/staying active, learning how to say "no" to drugs/alcohol or waiting until they are mature enough physically AND mentally for sex, understanding the need for proper nutrition/diet), but to do it early on in the students lives so they know how (and why) to avoid risky behaviors/situations before it is too late. |
