I work in a very small private school (6th-9th grades) that does not have a gym or outside field/play area. (We are located in an office park.) Until now, we've been busing the kids to a local gym/field area. However, our administrators have decided to gut one of the buildings where our school is located and have told us to use that as our PE area. It is a 1500-1800 foot carpeted area with 8-foot hanging ceilings. (Ceilings apparently cannot be raised.) The area available outside is a parking lot (no grass). We're estimating 22-28 students per class (co-ed). Any ideas on how to conduct PE in such an area? Any suggestions are much appreciated. |

My very first year of teaching , I was in that situation by using an empty clasrrom for a few days and then moving tables, chairs , plants , etc, for the other two days . My average space was around 18 by 24 . The lights hung dangerously close. So, I will have to say that safety would be the first issue. For the lights , they must be anchored with a firm wire( ask the janitor for help) and work together , he will be your best friend. Pad all wall corners with gymnastic mats or foam insulation( home depot, etc.) But, the final problem is what to teach and still make it appropriate. Luckily , I learned to be very creative by not obly using regular equipment , but also homemade stuff. I never threw out anyhting I can use from dryer sheets( juggling) pop cans(bowling) to foam insulation ( tagging , jumping over foam on cones). You must ADAPT on a mini plan. Basketball becomes scooter ball , soccer becomes crab scooter soccer , volleyball becomes beach ball , etc. Most of my activities were in a rectangular or multi circle formation. If you can believe it , I still could be proud to say that activities were appropriate. I had enough equipment for every student or shared between two students. Can you imagine this for volleyball? I out up a a long net in between two courts with garbage bags over top and had two games at once with 3 in the front and back . Even before that , I practiced skills with balloons and beachballs in small circles . Yes , even basketball in an activity like Box Ball: BOX BALL: Place four teams on each of the four lines in a square formation . Place a box of balls for each team at one end of the line and another at the other end that is empty. On a signal , the balls are takes from the box one at a time , and passed until all have ended up in the empty box. Repeat the process but changs the type of pass or position of the players(sit , lay down , etc.) or the ball movement(dribbling)... then the end player shoots a hoop, etc. Please peruse my webpage for more ideas at http://igreen.tripod.com/gerpe
