What are some other variations of dodgeball? I know that when I was in elementary school, cones were spread out across the gym floor and we had to knock the cones down. Any other suggestions? |

I use two different alternatives to dodgeball (though play it rarely these days). One is Fitness Dodgeball. Another is Fitness Gamble. Both have a list of exercises numbered 1-11. On Fitness Dodgeball, if a student is "eliminated," instead of sitting out, they perform exercise #1 and then re-enter the game. The next time they are out, the proceed to #2 and so on. #11 is simply "start over." The gamble version is the same list, but instead of performing the exercises in numerical order, they roll dice to determine which exercise they perform. You can have them roll one die for half the game and then both later to add the two together. With Fitness Gamble, I've also given the opportunity for the students to roll doubles of something to get back into the game without the exercise (two sixes, snake eyes, etc.). I'm including my current lists of exercises. Obviously, you can create your own. We also set up 3-5 bowling pins on each side of the gym for each team to knock over. This can provide a way for each game to be limited in time and keep kids in play. (Another alternative I use is that the ball can get you out even if it is rolling or bouncing. I don't allow the boys to target girls unless they can get them on a bounce or roll.) |

Cliff, It sounds like the exercise is used as punishment for being eliminated. Do you ask kids how they perceive this? |

Cheryl, great question. To be honest, I've never asked them that question. I will look into it, though. Thank you for asking that. At this point, the initial response I receive is mainly positive (again, this is without actually asking them yet). Most of the kids run to the exercise area so they can quickly get back into the game. But again, I do not want it to be a "punishment." |

A modification that I use is called rollerball. Bowling pins are set up at each end of the playing area. A long rope is set up at half court 3ft from the floor. Every ball that is rolled must go under the rope. The object of the game is to knock your opponents pins down. If the ball is rolled and touches your opponent the person it touches goes to jail. If it is fielded cleanly the person is not out and continues play. The jail holds 3 people and once the 4th goes in the first person can enter the game. Once your opponents pins are down the game is over. |

A variation that may be more appropriate for PE Classes has students throwing at a Cageball instead of each other. You can see an article about this game at the following page: Physical Education Games - Dodgeball Variation

I use a variation that I call "Doctor, Doctor". When a student gets struck by a ball, he/she kneels down in that spot. He/she calls for the "Doctor" who then attempts to make the student "well" by tagging him/her with a water noodle. If at any time the doctor gets hit by a ball, the game is over and the other team gets a point. The kids really love this challenge. |
