I am a Phys. Ed major and the biggest problem that I have is that I am not flexible at all. I can't even touch my toes. I don't want to go out and get a job as a PE major and not be able to show my students the proper forms of stretching. I stretch almost everyday but nothing seems to help. Any suggestions?!? |

Maybe it's the first nameha, ha. I actually have very little flexibility and my own children are the same way. As a PE teacher, I figure it's a good way to show children that we are not all "perfect" I believe that flexibility is very important and I strive for children to always improve their personal best scores but I don't make a big deal out of who can stretch 35 cm. in the Sit and Reach Test. Physical education, physical activity and life long physical fitness is not about any 1 thing, it's about treating your body well by being physically active several times a week in DOING SOMETHING THAT IS FUN AND ENJOYABLE. Just because you can't touch your toes, make a 3 pointer or throw a football through a hula hoop is not the point, but if you know the proper motor skills to do these, and if you are engaging in activities, games and sports that are fun and enjoyable, you will want to do it more and you will continue a lifetime of healthier living through this activity. Don't get hung up on the details. |

I have the same issue! I am athletic and always have been, but I have also always failed the flexibilty tests given through out school. What I plan to do is show the proper way of stretching, and since I cannot do it the entire way, have a felxible student be able to show the class what they can do. This helps them be more confident in something they are good at. And it also shows that every one is different, not everyone is a gymnast. |
