I have been a teacher for 13 years, but I just started in a public school 2 years ago. This is the first time I have had to do grading. It is a struggle for me. I feel discontent about our grade categories but I am not sure what the answer is. We grade on participation, attire, sportsmanship, and skill. The worst for me is the skill category. I feel guilty giving anything less than an Outstanding because I feel that physical education is a place where every student should be able to experience success and have positive feelings. If you are reading this post and you feel like your district has effective elementary grading policies and categories- please give me some ideas. Before you know it, grades will be due again and here comes that guilty feeling! |

S N U and almost always an S. PE is about getting kids moving and having fun at the same time. Grades are just some one's idea about the holy grail of "ACCOUNTABLITY" I give the President's Physical Fitness test to each kid every year. That and their lap totals holds them personally acountable for their activity or non-activity. |

Steve, I beg to differ. Physical activity is about kids moving and, hopefully having fun at the same time. Physical education is about kids learning and, hopefully, having fun at the same time. The National and most state standards are clear about what a physically educated person is and the grading policies should reflect those learning targets. |

I had the same feeling about grading in elementary PE when I started. I also wanted PE to be the place where the students could have fun, get exercise, and learn some lifetime skills. I understand that grading/assessing does provide validation to what we are teaching. I grade on a point system in three categories. Effort, sportsmanship, and skill are all assessed throughout a marking period. 40% of their grade is effort with 30% being sportsmanship and skill. If a student earns 90% or greater they receive and O (outstanding), 70-89% is Satisfactory, and 69% and below is and N, needs improvement. This is all done in a grading system called Sapphire which is accessible by the studetns so they know their grade at all times. |
