There are tons of great warm-up activities for elementary students. Toilet Tag, Builders and Dozers, etc. Can anyone name some more? |

I have a great game that my kids love. DRAGON TAG: Give three students (Dragons sporting a tail) a juggling scarf to put in their back pocket or waste band. They are IT. If they catch you, you have to fall to the floor and be a pile of ashes (Dragons breathe fire, after all) until the teacher calls your name to get up and play again (only leave them down on the floor for about 20 seconds). Remind students to look out for piles of ashes (don't trip). Here's the really fun part: Those people who aren't dragons can sneak up and steal a dragon's tail to become IT. Add little rules of your own like: No stealing a tail from a dragon who's just putting it on. Dragons can't hold on to their tail when running. Etc., Etc.
Enjoy! It's fun to watch, too, as kindergarten dragons tend to run away from the one's who are tail thieves even though they could turn around and tag the "thief".

Scrunchie Tag: Get tons of small scrunchies from a dollar store. Give each child 3 of them. They place on their index finger. Everyone is "it". If a child is tagged, he/she must give the tagger one of their scrunchies as a penalty. The tagger must say "thank you", and the person who gave it must say "your welcome" in order to continue playing in the game. While they are performing the exchange, no one may tag them.
If a child gives their last scrunchie to a tagger, he/she must take a knee. The only way for them to get back into the game is for someone to "donate" a scrunchie to them, allowing them to participate again. Look to see if someone sacrifices their last one to get another back in the game...
This is a never-ending activity if performed correctly. This game is a hit among my kids, but also myself. I really like the cooperative piece (manners)! Give it a try. |

Batman Tag! There are three "bad guys" who are the taggers, the Joker, the Penguin, and Catwoman. These three run around and try to tag the other students to freeze them. Two other students will run around as Batman and Robin, the "good guys." If a student is tagged by the Joker, they have to jump around like a joker until Batman or Robin unfreeze them. If a student is tagged by the Penguin, they have to waddle like a penguin until Batman or Robin unfreeze them. If a student is tagged by Catwoman, they have to get on the floor and crawl like a cat until they are unfrozed by Batman or Robin.
This game is a big hit with little kids, just make sure they are aware of the other students because there are some students crawling on the ground and jumping around. |

In my movement education class, we discussed a website that has many "energizers." www.ncpe4me.com is a PE, North Carolina based site with information on energizers to get the kids excited and involved. It can be used in PE or the regular classroom. It attempts to stay abreast of PE, Health Ed, Athletcis and sports not only in North Carolina, but also the nation. |

Warm-up activities are a great way to get your kids up and running around and excite them for your lesson that day. A great tag game I played in one of my physical education activity classes was "Banana Tag". In this game depending on the size of your class, two people will be "it" and they will run around tagging their peers. If you get tagged you have to put your hands up in the air with your hands together and lean to a side as if you were a banana. You have to remain standing there like a banana until two of your fellow peers come around to "un-peel" you and then you can get back in the game. The two students un-peeling you each take one of your arms and pulls them down. After a few minutes pick new people to be "it". |
