Is health taught in elementary schools? I know that some teachers are assigned to teach a main subject like science and then are asked to teach health as well. I want to know if Health is a class all by itself and if it's not, why? |

I don't think health is taught as a class by itself for elementary students in most districts. However, I did sub in a district where the 4th graders were taught health once a week for 40 minutes by the p.e. teacher in their classroom. I feel it is very important for the p.e. instructors to incorporate health into their classes so the children are getting some health information. |

I teach PE twice a week to each class K-3 and then I also teach health to them once a week. (25 minutes) Some are taught in their classrooms and some are in the gym. Kindgergarten has PE every day and I incorporate health (recycling, hygiene, etc) into PE. (20 minutes) |

I was wondering at what age is an appropriate one to start informing children of obesity, and teaching them in a way that they are able to understand how important it is to maintain lifetime physical fitness? |

Most schools teach health but it comes in all forms. Some integrate into other subjects and some teach it as a class of itself, especially in the upper grades. Jonathan: I posted comments on the appropriateness of informing children of overweight, leading to obesity/diabetes etc., on another posting. But to repeat, it is never to soon to open this discussion, but very cautiously. |

In my own kid's school in Virginia, I know they are not getting ANY of the health standards Virginia has for that grade level. I want to ask the school WHO/Which teacher is responsible for the health standards at this grade..but I know the 3 R's are much more important. |

I teach in a private Montessori school k-8. Health Ed is very important to us. I see grades 1-6 once a week and 7-8 twice a week for health. We have standards from the State of Ohio to meet and I cover far more. |
