We all know that it is important to have our young elementary students gain imformation about exercise and physical activity. Some do this by providing information about Health Related Fitness Components. (Muscular Strength, Endurance, Flexibility, Body Composition, and Cardiovascular Endurance) We learned that teaching SPORTS is a process that we introduce during the middle school years. Now, more and more young children are getting involved in sports at a younger age. With this happening, is it important to continue teaching Health Related Fitness Components, or is it important that we begin to relate to the younger students and teach more SPORT related skills? If you can help me with any ideas or comments that would be very appreciative! Thank You |

I think our major challenge is to get kids physically active. We can do this in a variety of ways, but the key component to everything that we do is that it must be developmentally appropriate. When I see the words SPORT related skills, I assume you mean getting kids skillful enough to participate in team sports. I don't know if that is a realistic goal. The amount of time that it takes for kids to become skillful is enourmous, which is why you see kids specializing in team sports at a very early age. I think a better goal is to make sure we get kids skillful enough to become active participants. When they become skillful, you will see activity levels rise. Just a thought. |
