Besides the usual way of finding new activities, books, PE central, mrgym.com, where else do people find activities to use in their classes? |

I wrote a fair amount of "untried/untested" activity, for me. I started with what I knew best, which was fly fishing. My working partners taught me the basics of skiing, so I could teach on dry land, even if I didn't ski (bad knees). Then I looked at past experience, the Olympic Games and what I had seen during various conferences. Came up with Fencing, Scooter Board (Olympic Games and Auto Cross) and plyometrics, which bets the heck out of weight training. Also adapted Melinda Bossenmeyers Project Adventure to my situation. Eventually I even took up Country Line and Folk Dance. Big step for a guy in his mid 50's. At a school with a 67% "At Risk" student body, the kids became very engaged. Enjoyed new activities. I was fortunate because my colleagues were creative beyond the norm. They taught Archery, Camping and Orienteering, Juggling/bowling/croquet, Ultimate Frisbee, Golf and a lot of other really nifty stuff. We DID change the environment of a very difficult school. You are never too old to change. The question you must ask yourself is not "Is this working for me", but "Is this working for the kids." You can make your own equipment as we did with Fencing and Plyo, keep personal fitness folders, do art work and have the music going every day. It was (and probably still is) a great life. |

Google Frank and Mike's physical education page. It has excellent activities and also a great educational link page. |

Working in a small county and small schools I am on an island pretty much. And like Joe am into my 50s. I try to create something new each year. Recently it seems like I am hitting a small wall with my energy level and enthusiasm. I know it is me but is hard to fight at this time. I have new deck tennis rings and millions of ball pit balls. Never taught deck tennis or even have a clue about it. I see it as for older kids. The rings were donated. I decided to break my kids up into small groups and asked them about inventing things. Then I challenged them to make up a game with 2 small rings and 2-3 plastic balls. I was amazed at how they came up with stuff. This is using higher level thinking and has no right or wrong answer. I liked how they started out confused and somewhat perturbed and then came back with lots of enthusiasm and energy. When I get outside my box good things happen. I need to read "Who Moved My Cheese" again. |

Attend your state AHPERD conference. It is a great resource for many things...activities, people, networking, meeting vendors, re-energizing, thinking...it's worth every penny you spend to attend. |
