As a future PE teacher I was wondering if you conducted your class with the idea of truly educating your class about physical activity, or if you simply used the class time as a time for physical activity for the students? I believe that we should first EDUCATE the students about staying active and the correct way of doing so, but I was wondering what your thoughts were. Primarily at the elementary level. -Luke |

I totally agree with you. We need to first educate our students about staying active and provide means of getting them to see value in it. You can educate them by putting them through physical activity. Have you ever heard of "learning through experience"? I think that it is the best way to learn something and it is how I learned throughout my student teaching. Simple ideas like making up a saying such as "If you heart beats stronger, you'll live longer!", the kids will remember the saying and remember the importance that you placed on it. You need to provide extreme amounts of enthusiasm in elementary grade levels and this is an important subject to be enthusiastic about. We also as a profession need to be able to show to the students the improvements/importance of physical activity so that it relates to them specifically. That is why I love the idea of heart rate monitors and fitness assessment. This provides benchmarks for improvement so that you can emphasize a goal to be reached. Just a few thoughts.
