I am a foreign student from Ireland studying here in America and i am
wondering how do you think that pupils/schools would react to the
introduction of a foreign sport for instance Hurling(Irish sport similar
to hockey and baseball) I do know that americans have played these sports
and would be well able to pick up the game quickly,providing of course
that the Hurling sticks were provided (almost the same as a hockey
stick).. do you think that it would be a good idea to introduce different
cultural sports in a PE class so that pupils are more aware of different
games and cultural sports...in Ireland we have taken up American football
and really enjoy it now perhaps its time for us to share our native sport
with you, any ideas would be greatly appreciated..

I just came across this website and was intrigued by your question, Aoife. I am a college dance major and have recently traveled to Europe and noticed that Americans do not realize the vast world that lies outside of our borders. I think that any way a teacher can implement culture into curriculum is well worth the time and effort he/she might need to put forth. Most kids love sports and it seems that would intrigue students to open their minds by learning more about various countries and the lifestyles that their peoples lead. In our education system, it seems we need to add more than reading, writing and arithmitic because students are coming out ill prepared for the "real world." It sounds as though you have a great idea started here...keep going with it. Ignore the negative feedback and have fun doing it. I am sure you will find success, even if not at first. Aoife, to answer your question, I think as a student and future Physical Education teacher I feel that incorporating foreign games into the curriculum is a great idea. It will keep to the idea that the students are still being active, as well as give them a challenge to research and find out more information about the many activities that are from around the world. Nowadays the classrooms are becoming more diverse and with including lessons on foreign games it will allow all students to understand the different ethnic backgrounds, from around the world. |

I have been including rugby, Aussie Rules(Footie), rounders, and netball in my curriculum for years. The kids love learning an activity being played in other countries. I encourage all PE teachers to think and teach "outside of the box". In a global society our teaching should also be global in nature. I want to include cricket as well. Hopscotch around the world is fun too! |

I think including sports from different countries is a great idea. I am college student, but I personally would love to learn different sports from around the world. I think it is a great learning opportunity for students to get to experence different sports. Some students get sick of doing basketball and volleyball every year. Sports from other countries would be fun, and a different way to learn and play in PE class. |

Being a student from England I have to say that I 100% agree with you. Including foreign sports into the curriculum would be a great idea. I have learnt so much from the American sports and I feel that the children will benefit immensley from English sports. To keep students on track you have to mix it and what could possibly be a better way than including a foreign sport. It would be highly knowledgeable not only to the students but to the teachers watching also. |

Absolutely you should incorporate foreign sports into american lesson plans. In highschool I was taught the rules, history and how to play cricket. After that lesson I noticed how diverse Physdical Education is and I feel every teacher should teach this way! |
