Hey all, I am a student teacher from Ireland and in Ireland martial arts and self defense is not part of the school curriculum. My question is whether it is part of the curriculum in the United States and whether it should or shouldn't be? I myself firmly believe it should but I would love to hear everyone's views on the matter. Looking forward to hearing from you all, Maria Moriarty

I don’t know about martial arts being taught else where, but in my school in NY, we had learned some self defense in my physical education classes. It was taught at the beginning of our kick boxing unit. We would have a professional come in and talk to the class and teach some martial arts self defense moves. |

I am from Pittsburgh, PA and have never heard of anyone teaching martial arts in P.E. but I think it would be a great idea to teach this, because of the great cardio workout they would get. I just am not sure about the liability. It would have to be no contact. |

I went to school in a small town in Pa, about an hour from Pittsburgh. We didn't have anything like this in our PE program. I think it would be fun and educational, but my only concern is whether kids at a high school level are mature enough to learn this. You have to think back and remember how immature some kids were in high school and if you teach them something such as martial arts they make take advantage of a skill like that. I think if the class was mature enough then it would be a great and fun idea. |
