Should the focus in physical education classes be shifted from team sports
to lifetime and leisure activities? It is a well known fact that as
children get older there are not as many opportunities for them to be
involved in team sports therefore why is the focus in physical education
classes based on these activities?

I always feel that a balance of activities is appropriate. Students should have opportunities to participate in team activities as well as lifetime activities. This is not an all or none proposition...

I agree there should definitely be a balance. Lifetime activities such as golf should be taught more often for definite however as there is now an abundance of golf courses.

I feel that there should be a balance between teaching team sports and lifetime activies. Being that i played football and watched my chances of playing decrease as i moved up threw the ranks. I wish i would have been more exposed to the lifetime activities so that i would have something to do on my own time and with friends

Being a non athlete growing up and not having an opportunity to ever step on the floor as a varsity H S athlete, I still say a balance of everything is good. Having both team and lifetime experiences have positive impact on a life. As for lifetime activities, I would vote for more snow for more downhill skiing, which is not generally taught in schools.

I agree that there needs to be a balance between lifetime activities and team sports. It is important to include the lifetime activities to teach the students the value of staying active throughout their lives. At the same time, I do not think team sports should be eliminated from PE. They promote friendly competition and teamwork. Team sports get younger children interested in sports that they continue to play throughout school. But those same students need to learn about lifetime activities so once they are done playing that sport, they have something else to fall back on.

P.E. is supposed to teach students to be physically fit and healthy for a lifetime. The chances that anyone, no matter how good they are will be able to play football or baseball all of their life are very slim. They need to learn the value of fitness and activities that make that an option for life. Handball is a great game for all ages and can be played until you are 80. It is a very good vigorous workout. Handball should be taught more in public schools. Another great lifelong activity is Tennis. Tennis is great excercise and it can be played for a lifetime. Golf is another good lifetime sport. Golf is not as vigorous of a workout as Tennis or handball, but it is a lifetime sport and you get good exercise if you walk. Badmitten is also a good sport for good exercise and can be a lifetime sport.
I played football and baseball growing up. I think they are great sports and teach temwork, but I never get the oportunity to play them. I love golf and wish I had more time to play. Handball is fun and you only have to find one person to play. Tennis is a great sport. i find a lot of enjoyment in it. All of these sports are played competitively, and the oprtunity to play them will actually increase with age(for the most part).
Running is somrthing that should defifitely be taught in schools. Form is not always addressed. Students need to learn how to increase their stamina over distances and build up their Aerobic Capacity. All sports should be taught is school, but the lifetime sports I mentioned are better for aP.E. class focused on helping students become healthy fo a lifetime. How will you be healthy for a lifetime without lifetime activities to keep you activewith vigorous activity?

I have posted lesson plans for teaching handball in both elementary and secondary schools. Also free workshops and in-service training is available by going to www.ushandball.org. There is even a page dedicated to educators. http://www.ushandball.org/content/category/39/173/ 196/

Physical education is supposed to teach the student how to be a physically educated person to live a healthy and active lifestyle! At the high school that I teach at we have been changing our curriculum to more lifetime activities like golf and weight lifting, and yoga. We have also included heart rate monitors and pedometers in our units to teach our students about target heart rates and the importance about reaching goals. I want my students to find atleast one thing they like before they leave high school so they can continue it for the rest of their lives!

At our school we have gradually been de-emphasizing the importance of team sports, while incorporating more lifetime activities. We still teach team sports, but specific skills are not focused on, fitness is. Most of the time we play small sided games to get more students involved and most importantly, moving. I agree with the last post in that we need to find at least one sport/activity that interests our students enough that they will want to continue playing it or pursuing it once they leave high school. I also like to challenge the students to think of ways to "change" the game to make it more active. They come up with some pretty creative adaptations that we continue to use in other classes and in subsequent school years. So yes, the focus should be shifting more to lifetime fitness but we do not have to completely abandon the traditional team sports model in order to accomplish this.
