I was wondering what people's stands are on their students dress. What if someone did not dress properly, do they sit out or do you make them participate anyway? |

Our school has a PE Uniform dress policy. In order to participate, the student needs to be in uniform. For those students who forget their uniform, we have a "loaner" program. They provide collateral (a bookbag or folder) and we loan them a uniform. We're trying to come up with a consistent solution to those students who abuse the loaner program and never bring their own uniform. Sometimes, we give them shorts or shirts that are too small for them. Sometimes, they have to pay us with 50 jumping jacks. Sometimes, we make them wait until all the other students are done and gone outside. All-in-all, given our school location/environment, this is a good policy and I wouldn't want it removed. However, there are kinks that all revolve around staffing inadequacy: No one stationed in the locker room, so when a student comes late, they can't change (I can't leave 49 students alone to supervise one student in the locker room while he gets changed). When this happens, some teachers have them sit and not participate. I don't: these students are still responsible for the class content and so they participate. It's not perfect, but we're working on it. |

Due to the amount of excessive rentals and the lack of rental uniforms, we devised a rule at quarter time where the students could only rent three times per quarter, whether they only rented part or all. There was a list of all students in PE in alphabetical order (copied and pasted into Excel and sorted), that we used to check off on. We only have two teachers for 120 students at times. One of us monitors the lockeroom and the other does rentals for 2 minutes only. It seems that when the students are given the responsibility, they do well. |

As an intern last semester at a High School, the students were only allowed one day when they could get away without dressing and sit out. After their first no-dress, their grade went down a whole grade. We of course always encouraged them to borrow from other students. We also had one pair of extra sweat pants and tennis shoes just in case. At the High School level, we felt that they were responsible enough to bring their physical education clothes or at least talk to a teacher if they did not have the funds for them. |

I would say that if a student did not show up to class in proper clothing then they should have to sit out. The reason that we have "proper" clothing in P.E. is for safety. If a student shows up in hiking boots and very baggy clothing then they are hazardous not only to themselves but to others as well. Safety First. |
