In your opinion why do you feel that Physical Education has neglected aquatics in the students PE program? |

Aquatics should not be neglected in PE programs; it can be just as important as any other unit in PE. Although I feel it's not one of the easiest activities to accomplish because not all schools have indoor pools. But I feel if a pool is available then PE should utilize it. It can be very beneficial if it is planned properly. |

If a person teaches aquatics as part of their PE curriculum, do they need to have their WSI or lifeguarding certificate? I just began at a school that aquatics is a major part of the curriculum. My former schools did not have pools, so I let my WSI expire. It is difficult to keep a WSI up to date. So, am I not allowed to teach this unit legally without a certified lifeguard. Our students do not have study hall, so there is no free time for student aids to come into the pool as lifeguards. Any info would be appreciated! |

I think that they have neglected aquatics because of not having a pool, people not being qualified to teach the unit, and not enough PE time. I think they should not neglect it though if there is a pool to use. If they have one, they should use it, and if the teacher is not qualified to teach the unit, they should go through a course on how to teach aquatics. |

Although, I am a huge advocate of incorporating aquatics into physical education, (when I become a physical educator I hope to have a pool to work with) I believe that a lot of programs have left it out because they do not have the qualified people to teach the units. I do not think this is fair to the students. It is very important for everyone to learn how to swim, and I believe that bringing aquatics back into physical education classes will help this out tremendously. |

I feel that the biggest reasons for neglecting aquatics is because not all schools have an indoor pool or access to an indoor pool and not enough class time. I think that having an aquatics unit is very important because everyone should learn how to swim, I feel that it is a very important skill to have. Also, if the school does have a pool or access to a pool they should take advantage of that because teaching kids how to swim is a very important skill they should learn and have. |

Aquatics has been neglected in the physical education program at too many schools throughout the nation whether it be because the staff is not properly trained, or there isn't the facility or equipment. As an aquatic minor, I am learning the importance of introducing aquatics into physical education programs at schools. Not only can aquatics be used for an excellent workout, properly knowing the safety that will then become life-long. |
