As with many people, I love to play baseball and softball. The only problem is that not too many people are active at one time during this activity in a P.E. class. Students are also prone to behaving off task if they are not involved. Does anyone have any suggestions that would get more people involved and students performing on task? |

Try modifying by having multiple base-runners...each runner who rounds the bases and makes it home before fielding team can "field" the ball and throw to each of the bases = 1 run... |

In elementary I play with a soft softball now (it still goes far) and we play two pitch with your own pitcher. You get just 2 pitches to hit fair. If the ball hits the pitcher (your teammate) you are out. THe game moves much quicker and everyone gets many more at bats. |

I agree with alot of students enjoying the game, and unfortunately the prescence of not being active at one time. I think this depends on the grade level of the students. This activity doesnt need to be confined to strictly playing a game though. If you are fortunate enough to be at a school with batting cages have the students practice this way. This encourages participation and skill production. You can also divide students into groups and have them throw each other pop-ups, grounders, pitches, etc. Of course, a game should be played eventually. You could have students rotate positions after each batter. This way students couldnt just stand in one place while they are in the field and eventually they would have the ball hit to them. |

In high school, we played a game called "Wacky Bat." It was played in the gymnasium and used a whiffle bat and a rubber ball. The batter would only get one pitch (no foul balls - everything was live). For the first inning, the rules were the same for baseball/softball, but changed every inning after that. For example, one inning you could have as many students on base as you wanted. This brought in stragety because you could stack your whole team on one base and have everyone score on one big hit. Some other rules were...only tagging a runner would get them out, not catching a ball; different base path order, second, third, first, home; hitting a homerun resulted in an out. This was a great way to bring excitement to baseball/softball, becasue some students perceive it as a boring game. |
