In my experience soccer has been a rather small unit in physical education. Now it's my opinion that soccer is one of the best sports to play in phys ed because it involves a lot of running and is a lot more enjoyable then running around a track. So I don't know why soccer is always a smaller unit then say volleyball. When I was in high school we always did a 4-5 week volleyball unit whereas soccer was only about 2 weeks if that. If anyone has any opinions that would be great.

I discovered long ago that soccer was the
best team sport to play in elementary school.
It is the great equalizer among kids. Size
and speed does not dominate and my kids love
to play. We play 4 weeks every year (now we only have PE 2.5 days a week). We even have an elementary tournament with all five county schools playing.

I personally think that soccer is always a smaller unit because teachers might not know how to play soccer. Soccer is still an upcoming sport in America where the other sports are more popular and aren't hard to teach and teachers are more familiar with playing them verse soccer. Soccer can get hard on teachers with not knowing what else to do but just play. Maybe they don't know any good drills that can involve all the students. Normally, it's easier for people to pick up a ball and use their hands but with soccer you have to use your feet and that's unnatural to people. If a teacher can't properly kick a ball they probably don't feel comfortable teaching it to their students. That's just my guess as to why soccer is always shyed away from in p.e. class.

I agree with Julianne. Many teachers are not aware of this great sport. Soccer is not only a fantastic part of any phsyical education program, but also one of the easiest games to play and experience success right away. Remember that soccer is the sport that is most played in the world. In the US youth soccer is the most popular sport and continues to grow.

I believe that more emphasis needs to be placed on comparing soccer to other sports. Most children seem to believe that soccer is much different than any other activity because one uses his or her feet instead of hands. However many concepts in soccer, such as different offensive and defensive strategies, can be related directly to sports like hockey and basketball. Just an idea to validate soccer to students and administrators, as it is often hard, as well as another common way to apply soccer in the classroom.
