Should uniforms be made mandatory for all students participating in Physical Education classes?. By making everyone wear the same uniform it will make the students look more like a team, more like they are a part of something. |

i agree with uniforms in phys ed. classes. Not only does it bring the class together on look, but it can also take away distracting clothes of other students. |

I agree! It also eliminates their street clothes getting dirty or ruined! |

I have to disagree, I don't think that uniforms should be mandatory in physical education classes. I believe that uniforms for one class is just a waste of money. Students should be able to wear their own physical activity clothing, as long as it meets the dress code and is appropriate for activity of course. Though uniforms do look nice, i don't believe that they are neccessary. |

Uniforms in Physical Education are a good idea. It has many advantages, 1) stops students from wearing inappropriate tops with references to illegal substances and foul language. 2) It makes sure students are wearing appropriate clothing i.e. no inappropriate body parts are showing. 3) It stops students from wearing team clothing, If students wear the incorrect team they may be subjected to verbal comments and off task behaviour may occur in the class. Finally the uniforms do not have to be expensive with the school crest on them, they can be plain and simple i.e. a black pants and a black t-shirt. |

I feel that mandatory uniforms in physical education classes are a good idea in the elementary level. At this age, children are learning basic skills about listening, teamwork, following instructions, and what is right from wrong. Making elementary children wear uniforms is dipping into each one of these skill areas. They are learning right from the start what is proper dress wear for physical education class. If they don't have their uniform or refuse to wear it, there can be disciplinary actions to teach the child what is right from wrong and how to follow instructions. However, once you reach the middle and high school level, students should already know what is appropriate and not appropriate for physical education class. If they fail to meet those requirements, then they can be disciplined accordingly. |

I don't feel that mandatory uniforms for physical education is a great idea, but I do feel that it could be beneficial for some school districts. I honestly feel that schools with a great deal of diversity would benefit from uniforms in class. This will be a way of creating a uniform environment, which in turn will help students participate more because they won't be as worried about their apparel. It seems that uniforms would create less drama and help keep the class more focused on the skills they are learning. |

This year our PE program offered an inexpensive uniform option for our middle school. They could order a tshirt in grey or blue and shorts in grey or blue. The cost was $4 for a shirt and $9 for the shorts. We had about 90 students purchase the uniform and we are going to put in a second order soon.
We hope within a couple of years we can have all the students wearing them to help eliminate the problems of what the students wear. But also it helps with belongings being stolen in the lockerrooms, if a shirt goes missing it is a 4 dollar shirt not a 25 dollar shirt. |

I agree with what Nicole said about uniforms in the elementary level. It is a good idea to get the kids to wear uniforms at that age, to better prepare them for middle school and high school. When all of the students have the same outfit on it shows that they are all equal and are a team. Also, the kids will know what is appropriate and acceptable to wear for PE class if they all have a uniform.
The only downfall to having uniforms is if the student forgets to bring it to school on the day of PE class. All in all though, I think it is beneficial to make PE uniforms required. |

We recently changed the "dress" requirements for physical education at our school. We now require students to wear a white t-shirt and dark blue or black shorts/pants. When changing the requirements we were careful not to call it a uniform. We did not want parents to feel that they would need to purchase new items for PE. Most of the students already own a white t-shirt (we do allow writing or pictures on the shirt) and dark colored shorts. It has had many advantages. Our classes look better overall. It is easier to locate students when outdoors for class. It has also made it easier to keep students dressed within the district dress code. I feel it has eliminated many of the issues we would previously encounter. |
