I was just wondering what PE teachers opinions were on having their students run laps...good or bad? |

My kids run laps becaue the Pres. Phys fitness test requires them to run. I try never to punish them with laps. When I had them everyday we did a 3 week unit of running (some days I did something different to break it up) and had incentives for them. Most liked it. This year we will try the little feet for incentives (my other school REALLY liked it). The little plastic ones that lace into shoe strings. Probably not good above the elementary level. |

Running laps is a good way to get students to warm up. Especially, if the gymnasium or track are conveniently located near the dressing rooms. It can be apart of the anticipatory set. The students can get changed, come out of the locker, and begin running laps. |

Running laps is a great way for students to warm up. To make it more exciting for the students, maybe put on some music they like to get there adreneline up also. This is not a good thing to do everyday, but it is a good thing to do everyonce in a while for a warm up. |

THis is a wonderful way to get students in shape for the mile run at the end of the school year because the standard is for every student to be proficient in it at the end of every school year. It should never be used to punish or disciplinary principles set by the teacher! Physical education needs to be made appealing and we need to make more diversity in our lessons and the way we teach in order to decrease obesity. I suggest doing running laps once a week and change the day of the week alternating every week. 1st week monday, 2nd week tuesday, 3rd week wednesday and so on. When you reach friday repeat the cycle until it is time for the test. |

I think it's fine, though I think 2 - 3 days per week is good if you want them to become better at it and build towards the mile. |
