I have a student who has caused problems in the past in my class, but if I allow this student to wear pants instead of the required shorts the student actively participates. Is it a problem that I am holding this student to a different standard than the others even though this is the only way the student will be a part of the PE class? |

From personal experiences with physical education uniform requirements, I would say that in a way it could pose a problem because then the other students in your class may think you are picking favorites within the class. When we didn't wear our phys ed uniform for class, we lost points and couldn't participate at all. And if you didn't have it the next day or refused to wear it, you lost points again and again until you realized that "maybe I should just go with the flow and wear it so I don't fail physical education." I know that last statement seems a little harsh but I think it would be in your best interest to try and sit down with the student and maybe even their parents and see if you can find the reason why the student doesn't want to wear the required uniform. Maybe you can all reach a negotiation that still requires the student to wear it with small adjustments that may not be completely noticeable to the entire class. Shawna Slippery Rock, PA |

For my P.E. class we never had to wear a certain shorts or t-shirt. We were allowed to wear whatever as long as nothing was showing and we could move in it. I think if you have to have set uniforms have options for the students so one day they can wear shorts or they can wear sweat pants. Some people don't feel comfortable wearing shorts around others and will pick the pants every time. And if the students feel comfortable they may participate more. |

I would enforce the issue of a dress code, especially in a physical education class. his pants could easily cause a distraction or pose a safety hazard. it could also appear to the class that you are choosing favorites |

You could change your dress code to incorporate nylon pants or sweat pants. The kid that wants to wear pants might feel insecure of his legs in some way. This also gives everyone in the physical education class more options on proper attire. |

In my middle school, we kind of had a dress code but it was limited to our school colors, tennis shoes of course, and we had the choice of wearing shorts or pants. It gives them a dresss code but also lets them have a choice so they arent embarassed for any reasons. |

I wouldn't keep the student out of class over not having the correct clothing because participation is the most important thing for class but send a note home to their family and notify them that your class requires shorts for class. |
