Here is a scenario: I was at a school volunteering in a physical education class. The physical education teacher allowed students to participate in boots and dress shoes. The teacher allowed students to participate in the activities so that they could be physically active for the day. Personally I thought this was hazardous because boots or dress shoes could possibly cause an injury. I would only allow students to wear sneakers. I was wondering if anyone had any opinions on this situation. |

I agree with you, students should not be allowed to participate in class wearing inappropriate shoes. An injury is very likely to occur and it would be the schools fault. If the school wants the students to be physical activity everyday for class a more strict dress policy should be inforced. |

I understand where the teacher could think that letting them participate and be active and healthy is more important than proper footwear, but maybe they don't realize that if they get hurt many things could happen: The student wouldn;t want to participate or get scared to do so - the student may get injured and CAN'T physically participate - parents could interfer and sue or take their student out of class not even asking their child how they feel about - and so on. Proper dress is brought up in my physical education class daily with what-if situations. We have all come to the conclusion that they students should be sat out or given an alternate activity. This will protect you and the student. Most likely the student will not be a repeat offender because, let's face it, gym class is the fun part of the day!!! |

Does anyone have a policy in place for the use of sneakers for PE class? I am running into more and more problems with kids that are wearing hiking boots or trail shoes with lug soles. Some of these soles are quite stiff and don't give the proper support that is needed for PE class. I guess if we were doing a unit on hiking they would be okay. I'm running into a wall as far as getting support from my admin. If I could show my principal some firm data about the need for proper footwear in PE class I think I will be able to get her on board. She is in the mind that a child should be able to wear what ever and not to worry about what might happen due to wearing the wrong footwear. Thanks for any help you can give me. |

this is an issue everyday with 16 different physical education teachers opinions in one office at the high school I currently teach at! Especially now with the uggs and the slippers with the "fashionable ties" that the students argue is a shoelace! I feel that the students need proper ankle support and if they are going to cut back and forth in sports like basketball or floor hockey they need to be able to have the grip and have their foot in that shoe. I always ask the question would they run a mile in that shoe!?!? I usually get the answer NO! However we have contracts that the students sign in the beginning of the year that says they will wear proper footwear and it defines what that is so a few arguments during the year isn't bad when they know we have something to back it up! |
