Does anyone have any strategies or instrucional information on how to lift weights properly and the behavior that should be in a weight room for students in PE class? |

Setting up a circuit/ rotation for your students to follow is always a good idea. Also make sure that you demonstrate how to use all of the equipment before you let your students use it. |

I think that weights can be used to success, but only with the right age ranges. I taught two personal conditioning classes at the middle school level and have to say that 7th grade is the youngest that I would do weight training with. We did the circuit fashion workouts (as mentioned by Joseph) and the students loved it. We saw amazing physical fitness changes for the positive and the weight training no doubt had something to do with it. It also depends on your facilities/equipment. Success is drastically changed if the equipment is not working properly or you are missing machines. George |

I think that this is a great question to ask because it is very possible for students to learn incorrect habits when it comes to weight training. I am a sophopmore in college studying Health and PE, and I am currently taking a class, Fitness Education, where we are covering important issues related to a fitness facility. It is very important to show your students the proper form AND the proper spotting form for each exercise, and also to inform them which muscle group it is benefiting. There are many students that I'm SURE are very skeptical to use weights at the YMCA or in fitness facilities because they are not familiar with "how they work," and they don't want to embarrass themselves trying. This is why I think incorporating a weight program in PE class is a great idea. You also have to be mindful of the safety concerns related to weight programs. Make sure that the students are performing the excercise and spotting correctly, or else there could be an injury. Also make sure that students are paired up with another student that is of similar strength, or else the "spotter" will be useless if they can not handle their partners weight. Working in pairs is also another great way for students to interact and hopefully motivate one another to work hard! Remember, I think a goal is to make sure that all students are staying active the whole time instead of "standing around." If you don't have enough equipment for all the students to be using at the same time, you can eliminate the "standing around" by having other activities set up for them to perform and using a circuit training method. I have observed a few schools' PE programs where they have weight training incorporated in their class, and they also use a circuit training method and have said of the many improvements in the students physical strength and endurance. I think one thing to keep in mind is making sure your students are having fun, but at the same time, taking it very seriously so no one gets hurt! I hope that I have given you a few ideas! |
