Relay Races are a great way to get students active. Students interested in any activity that involves cardiovascular endurance, will benefit from running sprints or distances. However, not everyone is interested in running or is interested in sports, so it’s a great idea for teachers and staff to encourage team work and cooperation to have students want to work together. Running relays as younger students will not only help students with teamwork, but it can also encourage students to improve not only running time, but to improve in sports and in group work, in which they are interested in. By incorporating teamwork, students and athletes will work together, and this can help them out with schoolwork, running and cardiovascular endurance, and with sports that they participate in. |

Relay races are a really great way to encourage teamwork. With younger children you can also do other things rather than just running, like crab walking, bear crawl, or even running backwards to make it a little more difficult. |

I agree that relay races are a great way to increase competition with students and raise their energy to compete and have fun! Field day is a great opportunity for all students to get involved with all the various activities. What are some ideas for relay races that you may have? Is leap frog appropriate? |

I also agree that relay races are a fun activity that promotes teamwork and students interest in physical education class. Relay races help raise the competition level which makes the students heart rates go up since they are more interested in the activity. With relay races you need to make sure that the activity the students are doing is age appropriate. Does anyone have any good ideas for relay race games for high school or elementary aged students? |

A different way to run a relay races is as follows. Let's assume your have 4 children on a team. They would all be at one end of the race. The first person would then run around the cone (or some other object you are using0 and come back to the start line and take the second person in line by the hand and the two of them would run around the cone and back and pick up the third person and then the fourth. First team that finishes while still holding hands is the winner. Want to make it harder? They must join two hands together and run as a pair, then a group of three and finally as a group of four, without letting their hands come apart. |
