Are there any swimmers or coaches out there that have an idea of what to do with swimmers who can't swim much in practice, due to shoulder pain/ overuse injuries, that still want to compete? What do you do when other swimmers say negative things like "he died in that race b/c he never swims a whole workout, he could have won those points"? |

I'm an Athletic Training Student currently in my fourth year of university. First off, with a swimmer with nagging shoulder pain, have an ATC ckeck her out to see what is wrong with her. If their is an overuse injury, than detcting this injury and treating it correctly is the first step to getting him/her back to full competition. Even if they want to compete, this will continue to aggravate the injury. You may ahve to pull them from practice/competition so you can get the problem under control. As well, maybe poor biomechanics or swimming techniques are the cause of the overuse injury so you, as the coach, can also look at this to make sure the athlete has proper technique. As with other swimmers negativity, you are going to have to discuss with them yourself your feelings. If the athlete is hurt, can't perform 100%, and is at risk for reinnjury then he shouldn't be swimming still in the first place. Make sure you get this point across to the athlete. |
