When planning a practice, I think it is very crucial to sit down and really put some thought into your plan. I know several coaches who would just wing it during practices, and you could definitely tell that they were very unorganized. Do you think it is best to lay-out a fully detailed practice plan on paper, or just think of ideas as practice goes on?

You definetly need to lay out a practice play before starting a practice. The worst thing you could do is not plan a practice then when youve offically ended practice you realize that you need to go back and work on something else. Your players will hate your guts if you make them go back onto the field once they think they are done. By laying out a practice plan you can be sure that you have every thing down on paper what you want to work on.

Planning a practice is essential, especially in sports with multiple elements to the game. An example of this is football. It contains offense, defense, and a large number of special teams. In addition to this, strength and conditioning is a valuable element. This being said, "winging" a football practice is coaching suicide. It is very important to have a routine of certain days to work on certain elements of the game. In addition, in order to maximize the efficiency of time, drills and activities should be planned with times to ensure the athletes get the most out of every practice.

This is a brief discription of how we plan our football practices. Everyday a new practice plan is made and printed off for each coach to have. On the practice plan, the day's agenda is broken down into periods, which last a certain length of time. Under each period section there is a brief description on what is to take place. We make sure to cover all three phases of the game in this plan (offense, defense, and special teams.)
