Coaching and Physical Education are two activities that go hand in hand. If an individual is a successful and joyous teacher, they also have the potential to coach students through the same technique. What factors differ coaching a team from coaching a class? What are the differences in the body of students during a PE class and a body of players on an athletic team? Why must a teacher alter their attitude and practices when changing environments with these two jobs? |

i agree with Pat that they go hand in hand. I think the two are parallel in a since that, some P.E. students need to be handled with care and the teacher should not question whether or not a student is trying hard or not. have fun and teach. In competition sports, outside of class, I believe you play to win. Ultimately the goal is to teach the student-athletes the proper fundamentals of the game, and obviously get good grades. parents today get the sense that extracurricular sports (mainly in high school) should be run like P.E. classes, i highly disagree. if the parents want their child's post-class activities to be like gym class, play intamurals. a coach should only have to worry about being loved by his players and winning at the same time; not who's kid do i have to play now. it's a a touchy subject to some, but i can explain more with responses. |

I agree with you that Coaching and PE do go hand in hand but there are some differences. One difference from coaching you will face when teaching a PE class is that not all of your students are going to be athletic. Many of your students will need to be motivated in order to get them to run a lap. The kids you will be coaching will hopefully want to be there being they chose to participate in that sport. One of your goals in PE class should be to get the students active. As a coach you will have time to critique and perfect the fundamentals of that sport. You have to remember that not all your PE students like competitive sports so you want to introduce them to other things that might be of interest to them. |
