For those of you who coach middle school track, how many of you have everyone compete in your big meet, or "city?" I just finished my first season, and we had everyone who worked hard during the season compete in at least one event, even if they weren't that fast/strong. A few that missed a lot of practice or didn't work didn't compete.

I let everyone who is coming to practice and putting forth some effort get at least one event. It rewards the kids who are consistent. Some of the kids who are more fast and work hard might get three or four events. The kids who are fast but have little work ethic or attendance issues might get one or two events. You have to balance being competetive and rewarding with giving the opportunity to compete.
